So there I was gettin away from all the fightins behind when I see's this crazy glow ahead a' me!

This month's theme: NON-METALLIC METAL! Paint a sword, gun, helmet, bit of shiny armor or something else WITHOUT using metallic paints - make it shiny in the right places, provide shadows and reflections in the right spots and earn GOLD (err, not metallic, painted).

"Now where were we, Miss Green. You have the password and NOW you have the necessary...modifications."

Modifi- wot?! Oh. OH.

Wot ‘av we gots ourselfs intah?

This month’s theme: Breast Cancer Awareness Month! Get your pinks (or just red and white) ready, because all you need to do is figure out a way to clearly incorporate pink into any model you do this month! Something, somewhere, must be pink. And not just a single dot either: a piece of armor (like an elbow pad or shoulder piece), a weapon, an article of clothing, etc., needs to be clearly PINK. If we’re forced to be exact, let’s go with a 3mm x 3mm (about ⅛” square) area on a 28mm model (all other scales can be scaled down or up as appropriate) of PINK has to be on your model. The pink has to be somewhere it is clearly visible in your final photo (e.g., not the bottom of your space tank), to get the points for the Detektuv’s Jurnal this month.

ALTERNATIVELY, you can paint the ‘pink ribbon’ somewhere on your model in whatever size, as long as it fits the scale (2-3mm high on a 28mm model is about right).

And remember, the judges will be giving 1 point EACH for the best creative use of pink, or the pink ribbon, done this month!

If you don’t want to do this Detektuv’s Jurnal or you just can’t see a way to do it on your chosen model(s), you can do any previous Jurnal to earn 1 point this month (instead of the 2 for doing the October Jurnal), but your Jurnal entry won’t be eligible for points from the judges.

We've also got a sweet extra bonus prize for anyone painting anything from Wyrd Miniatures, from goon Slimnoid! So get those Malifaux models out! We'll be announcing details in the next 24 hours.

September Theme

Me kontact had bin kleer. No uvver words would do. Da next guy I ‘ad ta speak to wouldn't even give the time of day unless I ad dese words about me person.

Oi 'anded de skrap ov paper to da git wiv da needle and sat in da chair wiv a mug ov fungus beer to numb da pain.

Dis would not be my furst ink. Back in me yoof days I lost a bet and now I ‘av a grot on me arse. Back den me mob 'ad all goff style as well so once I was a proppa boy I 'ad some 'efty black and white bizness all over da place.

Lots of uvvers too but now dis ones finished. I finished me beer and looked down at da password for da next lead:

ZOG OFF

'Bootiful job mate, fanks. Ere 'av anuvver toof fer da trubble.'

This month’s theme: FREEHAND! Dust off those skinny brushes, lick the tip and get going! Think up a design that will look cool on your model, whether it’s grafitti on a vehicle or building, tatoo on an arm, embroidery on a robe or a design painted on some armor. If you want some tips on how to do freehand work, check out this page: http://www.paintrix-miniatures.com/...?&art=11&page=1

And remember, the judges will be giving 1 point EACH for the best Freehand done this month!

If you don’t want to do this Detektuv’s Jurnal or you just can’t see a way to do it on your chosen model(s), you can do any previous Jurnal to earn 1 point this month (instead of the 2 for doing the September Jurnal), but your Jurnal entry won’t be eligible for points from the judges.

The weathering theme is the scrapes on the leading edge of the gun drones. Zipping around a battlefield has to mess up the paint job a little, I figure.

August Oath

So’s now we find ourself wanderin’ outsides dis city where I gots me arm fixed. Still lookin fo dis Loknar ting, and we gots no idears where we is! Oi gots ta fink bout where it could be so’s oi can get back ta me bottle- oi mean office!

I hooked a lift wiv some blokes headed out of town, but we had a disagreement when oi told em they could give me da trukk fo nuthink, so they chucked me out. So now we’s walkin and oi come across dis maze...stretchin' as far as oi can see! Nothin ta do but get troo it I guess, but it takes us ages oi tell ya! Der waz mud and dust and ‘oo knows wot else all gooped up in der...no way to get a wash, not that I'm bothered!

O well! Now that oi’m out oi’s just gotta walk where oi need to be. Where dis Loknar ting seems to be leading me...hopefully it's to a shower, oi'm jus' covered in gunk and dirt!

This month’s theme: WEATHERING! All you have to do is make your model look haggard, used and abused for this month’s Detektuv’s Jurnal. Mud, dust, rust, soot and more, it’s all fair game! Damage from weapons is NOT applicable, although you can use features like bullet holes, etc. as a focal point for the weathering on your model. Break out those brown and orange paints, or even have a try with some weathering powders!

And remember, the judges will be giving 1 point EACH for the best Weathering done this month!

If you don’t want to do this Detektuv’s Jurnal or you just can’t see a way to do it on your chosen model(s), you can do any previous Jurnal to earn 1 point this month (instead of the 2 for doing the August Jurnal), but your Jurnal entry won’t be eligible for points from the judges.

I, Dagon, oath 5 GW Tau Drones (2 Gun, 3 Marker) for August

July Jurnal

Detektuv’s Jurnal, Month 3
Well we gots away from that crazy ting goin’ on between da humies an’ dem pointy-eared poncies. All oi could o was jump back tru da glowy door but where did I find meself but in some dark city place, surrounded by people in trenchcoats! Dis wuznt me office at all! An’ here i woz wittout me arm!

It was all rainy and some people had glowy eyes, and dere were even flyin’ cars going about! It woz really dark...but oi had to get me arm fixed so we asked aroun and after sum time found a shop that had sum DIY bitz. We walked out wit sum glue and nails and oo noze wot else. Da furst time, I stuck me arm on backwards. Da second, it hung on for a minute den fell right off again. Da gloo just woznt workin. It woz gonna hafta be a visit wiv a doc.

Wandrin round a bit more, oi found a place dat had a red cross in front. Dat doktor fixed me up good, 'e 'ad a crackin' new metal one fer me. Dis one could punch froo a wall, and 'ad a handy bottle opener on it!

Oi tell ya, we walked down dat street feelin like a new ork! Now it’s just time for me ta relax wit a stogie and a drink!

This month’s theme: Cut And Swap! Change something somewhere on your model that noticeably changes the model. You must CUT something from the model, and then SWAP that part for something different, or at least reposition that part (like changing the pose of an arm or leg).

This can be:
- a weapon (change a pistol to sword, or a gladius to a scimitar, etc. - most suitable for vehicles, but use your imagination)
- a head (change your armored figure from male to female, from helmeted to not-helmeted, etc.)
- an arm (reposition the arm to change the pose somehow)
- a leg (reposition the leg to make the model standing on a skull, chest or rock, etc.)
- a tail
- a book or scroll
etcetera

As always, you are free to do sculpting or total conversion work, but the focus should be on the painting.

If you are assembling a model from parts, and the model has a variety of parts you can add to it (like a 40K space marine squad or a tank with various weapons), get creative! Put a weapon or something in a different location than originally intended (maybe an underslung lascannon instead of shoulder-mounted? or fitted to a backpack!), add a figure to a vehicle or something along those lines!

Examples: If you're assembling something like a Space Marine squad with separate arms, heads, torso, etc., putting one limb on a strange position doesn't count - that's too simple! You need to actually CUT a wrist or elbow and end up with a significantly different pose. You can also just glue on a different backpack from another set, or use a different head from a another set. If you're doing one-piece models for, say, Flame of War or Malifaux, make the model have a foot on a skull or weapons crate or something. Cut a head off and have it turn in a different way. Cut the shoulder and make the model point instead of have its arm straight down. That sort of thing.

To make sure we get the full flavor of the CUT AND SWAP theme this month, this month we'd like to see TWO PICTURES before you start painting: a 'BEFORE' picture as your initial oath picture with timestamp, do your Cut And Swap, take a SECOND, 'AFTER' PICTURE and then carry on with your painting. As always we'll need to see your Oath Complete picture before the end of the month!

If you've already converted your model, find a picture of it before conversion, provide a link or post the pictures and you're all good.

So just to be clear:
1. post your oath picture (this is your BEFORE picture) for approval
2. do the Cut And Swap
3. post the AFTER picture before painting (quote your original oath if you can)
4. carry on painting
5. post your Oath Complete picture

And remember, the judges will be giving 1 point EACH for the best Cut And Swap done this month!

If you don’t want to do this Detektuv’s Jurnal or you just can’t see a way to do it on your chosen model(s), you can do any previous Jurnal to earn 1 point this month (instead of the 2 for doing the July Jurnal), but your Jurnal entry won’t be eligible for points from the judges.

For Battle Damage, these are already pretty busted up, so I tried to give the windows some scorch marks, to give the impression of an explosion or fire having blown out from within.

June's Oath, WIP

Primed and assembled. That was tedious. Now all I have left to do is paint!

June Oath

15 Sprues worth of these buildings.

June's Jurnal

Oh noes! What ‘av we done!

I only took a step through da lady’s funny doorway and we only gone an’ arrived in the middle of a bloody great battle! Dese crazy humies and bloody pointy-eared freaks are ‘aving some sort of argument and de bullets are going right through me ‘at and coat! Oi only just washed dese!

Roight. Down to bizness. Duz it look like I'll find da ring or wot ever round 'ere?

Beakies overe dere... poncies over dere... Nope, don't fink it's 'ere! Time to get sumware else!

Oi looked about for a place to lay lo - Oi'd neva run from a scrap uzually, but I 'ad work to do and Beakies are maybe my least fave boyz to fite.

Looking down to check me gear, oi noticed me arm was on da ground and not on me elbow where it should be. 'Dat's funny,' I thort, 'Oi'm sure dat was attached a minit ago.'

To me right were sum poncie boyz in bloo, wiv a fancy no-eyed red lad among dem. Dere nasty lil gunz sendin zippy choppy bitz all over da place. Oi laffed dat dey couldn seem to 'it me agane til oi looked over me uvver shoulder and saw sum of da mega-wotsit beakies wiv shields an dat.

Oi decided to take me chances wiv da poncy boyz.

Pickin' up me arm oi Waaagh!ed in dere direktion, firin me slugga left an' rite. Oi krumped into dere lines just next to da blind red wun. 'Dis wun'll be eezy,' oi thort, 'da poor sap kan't see!' Oi swung me arms round but before oi could knock 'is ruddy block off 'e turned slightly and stretched out 'is 'and.

A great white blast smacked me over and sent me flyin', and before oi blacked out oi fort ... 'Dat's funny... Takin' an awful long time to land...'

This month’s theme: Battle Damage - let’s see what your model looks like with a bit of scarring!

This could be as simple as painting on some black dots as bullet holes or a red line as a facial scar, but we’d really like to see some effort put into some painting effects that take it up a notch or three. For example, 3D-effect claw marks, crash damage on a vehicle, scrapes and wounding or damage from various weapons. Don’t go overboard! because as we know ‘a little can go a long way’, but it should be obvious in your final picture what the battle damage is.

If you want to go crazy, do some conversion or sculpting work, but as always the focus should be on the painting - unless you're going all-out for the conversion contest!

Alternate Universe Oath... Complete?

So, this year, you can oath a thing that if you fail it doesn't count, and you don't get points for it but you get entered in a special prize thing. So I got some terrain to paint from a friend and did one of those.
There is also a speed painting bonus point thing, so I did that:
